Writing a paper on Teens and Internet usage... Feedback, Please?!?

For my Ethics class we have to write a paper chosing sides to if we think it is bad or good for pre-teens and teens to use sites such as MySpace, Facebook, YouTube, etc. What impacts, negative or positive do you think these sites play on kids/teens. Are you for or against kids/teens using these sites?

Writing a paper on Teens and Internet usage... Feedback, Please?!?
Positively, they are getting used to computers and sites and learning the "web lingo" so to say. They will have something in common with their peers, and feel like one of the in crowd.

But negatively, there is always the problem of predators, and people using the websites for the wrong reasons. As well, it is not face to face interaction, which a lot of young teens are lacking. This causes poor people skills which influences their future careers, relationships and self-esteem.
Reply:i think the internets the future so its all positive, in the future computers are where it's going to be at i really think that kids should start learning how to use html webpages, java script etc.
Reply:College kids should only use Facebook, but I see more and more high school kids or middle school kids on there. MySpace is a complete and utter sess pool for slime. I will not allow my daughter to have one. Especially since they just kicked off 29,000 registered sex offenders. YouTube should only be used under supervision. Any internet use should require supervision. Too much to risk, to many things that kids can be exposed to that they aren't ready for.

It is impossible to police every single site because the beauty of the internet is that you can be whatever and whoever you claim to be. That's what is so dangerous. It only takes one time to talk to the wrong person or give out too much information. Your whole life can be taken from you in an instant.

My daughter's email was hacked and used by a friend to sign up for all sorts of different accounts in chatrooms and websites. This 13 year old girl was using my daughter's email to talk to men that were 19-25 years old and probably older. I found out because I check my daughter's junk mail account from time to time. I know everyone that has her email address and saw this one address that wasn't familiar. I thought I was going to be sick. Because of this ignorant girl my daughter has now been exposed to the ugly side of the internet.

If kids are allowed to use them, then the parents need to make sure they are using them responsibly. It really isn't a toy. You don't want to butt into their private business, but there has to be some sort of line drawn.

I do not allow my child to have a myspace or facebook. She did have a YouTube account, but we came to an agreement and shut it down after the email incident.
Reply:well teens in high school seem to be addicted to facebook. its pretty sad. thats all people care about on the computer. they slack off on their homework and instead they go on facebook and put up pictures and write on each others walls. i think it has a negative affect on teens to be exposed to the computer so much. if they're going to be on the computer so often their brains may as well turn to mush.
Reply:Myspace helps guys get with girls.

Case closed.
Reply:every person is different. those with morals and high standards will have no problem getting a positive use and enriching experience out of the sites listed above. However, for the majority of US teens and pre-teens, that does note exist. Therefore, unless suddenly everyone becomes holy either internet usage should be banned entirely (unlikely and not a good idea), or it should be very closely monitored and perhaps parents should play a stronger role in controlling internet usage without being "overly-controlling".
